Basilica of Sant’Eustachio
Architecture beneath the sky.
On the stairways between Pontone and Minuta, the Basilica’s remains preserve the outline of its apses and their relationship with the landscape. The roof is gone; stone, arches and light remain.

Three details, one story.
The interlacing arches
On the apse walls, stones of different colours form arches and decorative patterns: the building’s most recognisable feature.
The three apses
The surviving end of the church still reveals the arrangement of its spaces. View it from outside and from the areas open to visitors.
The d’Afflitto connection
The Basilica belongs to the medieval world of the Duchy of Amalfi’s noble families. The d’Afflitto family, associated with its construction, had a residence nearby.
HOW TO GET THERE
A visit reachedon foot.
Choose your starting point. The approach differs from the residences, Minuta and Scala’s centre.
From Pontone
From the Via Tuoro area, reach the village and the walking connection towards Minuta. The route passes houses and steps, with San Filippo Neri along the connection; follow signs for Via Sant’Eustachio and the Basilica.
From Pontone, the approach climbs towards the Basilica; allow a different time from the descent from Minuta’s Annunziata.
From Minuta and Scala’s centre
From Piazza Municipio in Scala, Via Torricella leads towards Minuta, roughly 1 km to the Annunziata area. From the church, the Basilica route follows Via Lama di Pompei and Via Sant’Eustachio; Amalfi Coast 2.0 lists about 10 minutes on foot, with steps.
The 10 minutes refer only to the section from Minuta’s Annunziata. They exclude travel from Scala, the visit and the return.

Management publishes daily hours of 09:00–17:00, checked on 5 September 2026. The Basilica also hosts events: confirm opening, accessible areas, any admission fee and guided visits for your chosen day.

Steps, outdoor ground and the return
Wear shoes suited to steps. The route is not step-free and presents obstacles for pushchairs; discuss the actual approach with management if you have mobility requirements. Respect closed areas of the monument.
Returning from Sant’Eustachio to Pontone still involves walking and steps. Any guided visit or site admission is a service provided by its management, arranged separately from your stay.

Sources date the Basilica’s foundation differently: its management website gives the 10th century, while the FAI record gives the 12th. This account therefore places it in the Middle Ages without assigning a definite year. The 09:00–17:00 hours were published by management when checked; they do not guarantee access during events or later closures.
